Justice in society must include both a fair trial to the accused and the selection of an a
ppropriate punishment for those proven guilty. Because justice is regarded as one form. of equality, we find in its earlier expressions the idea of a punishment equal to the crime. Recorded in the Old Testament is the expression "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth." That is, the individual who has done wrong has committed an offence against society. To make up for his offence, society must get even. This can be done only by doing an equal injury to him. This conception of retributive justice is reflected in many parts of the legal documents and procedures of modern times. It is illustrated when we demand the death penalty for a person who has committed murder. This philosophy of punishment was supported by the German idealist Hegel. He believed that society owed it to the criminal to give a punishment equal to the crime he had committed. The criminal had by his own actions denied his true self and it is necessary to do something that will counteract this denial and restore the self that has been denied. To the murderer nothing less than giving up his own will pay his debt. The demand of the death penalty is a right the state owes the criminal and it should not deny him his due.

Modern jurists have tried to replace retributive justice with the notion of corrective justice. The aim of the latter is not to abandon the concept of equality but to find a more adequate way to express it. It tries to preserve the idea of equal opportunity for each individual to realize the best that is in him. The criminal is regarded as being socially ill and in need of treatment that will enable him to become a normal member of society. Before a treatment can be administered, the cause of his antisocial behavior. must be found. If the cause can be removed, provisions must be made to have this done. Only those criminals who are incurable should be permanently separated front the rest of the society. This does not mean that criminals will escape punishment or be quickly returned to take up careers of crime. It means that justice is to heal the individual, not simply to get even with him. If severe punishments is the only adequate means for accompanying this, it should be administered. However, the individual should be given every opportunity to assume a normal place in society. His conviction of crime must not deprive him of the opportunity to make his way in the society of which he is a part.

The best title for this selection is ______.

A.Fitting Punishment to the Crime

B.Approaches to Just Punishment

C.Improvement in Legal Justice

D.Attaining Justice in the Courts

How much living space does a person need? What happens when his space requirements are not
adequately met? Sociologists and psychologists are conducting experiments on rats to try to determine the effect of overcrowded conditions on man. Recent studies have shown that the behavior. of rats is greatly affected by space. If rats have adequate living space, they eat well, sleep well, and reproduce well.

However, if their living conditions become too crowded, their behavior. patterns and even their health perceptibly change. They cannot sleep or eat well, and signs of fear and tension become obvious. The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and even kill each other. Thus for rats, population and violence are directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well? Is adequate space not only desirable, but also essential for human survival?

This passage is mainly about ______.

A.living space and behavior

B.population and living conditions

C.interesting experiments on rats

D.a natural law for human society

What is the purpose of the experiments described in the passage?A.To determine how much living space a rat needs.

B.To see what happens when rats live in a limited space.

C.To know the likely effects of inadequate living space on human beings.

D.To find out the relationship between population and living conditions.

How would rats behave when their living conditions become too crowded?A.They eat a lot and become friendly to others.

B.They sleep little and act quite peacefully.

C.They eat little but sleep soundly.

D.They become nervous and tend to be war-like.

改错:What is a black hole? Well, it is difficult to answer the question

What is a black hole? Well, it is difficult to answer the question,

as the terms we would normally use to describe a scientific phenomenon __1__are adequate here. Astronomers and scientists think that a black hole is __2__a region of space which matter has fallen and from which nothing can __3__

escape—not even light. But we can’t see a black hole. A black hole __4__exerts a strong gravitational pull and yet it has no matter. It is only space—or thus we think. How can this happen? __5__

The theory is that some stars explode when their density increases to a particular point; they “collapse” and sometimes a supernova occurs.

The collapse of a star may produce a “White Dwarf” of a “neutronstar”—

a star which matter is so dense that if continually shrinks by the force of __6___its own gravity. But if the star is very large, this process of shrinking may be so intense that a black hole results in. Imagine the earth reduced to the __7__size of a marble, but still having the same masses and a stronger __8__gravitational pull, and you have some ideas of the force of a black hole. __9__And no matter near the black hole is sucked in. __10__

听力原文: Today, I'd like to preface my remarks with a story from my own life. Several yea
rs ago when my grandparents were well into their eighties, they were faced with the reality of no longer being able to adequately care for themselves. My grandfather spoke of his greatest fear, that of leaving the only home they had known for the past 60 years. Fighting back the tears, he spoke proudly of the fact that he had built their home from the ground up, and that he had pounded every nail and laid every brick in the process. The prospect of having to move into a retirement home was an extremely upsetting experience for them.

For them and some older Americans, their so-called "golden years" are at times not so pleasant, for this period can mean the decline of not only one's health but the loss of identity and self-worth. In many societies, this self-identity is closely related with our social status, occupation, material possessions, or independence. Furthermore, we often live in societies that value that which is "new" or in vogue.

Now, many lectures given at this conference have focused on the issues of pension reform, medical care, and the development of public facilities for senior citizens. While these are vital issues, I'd like to focus my comments on an underlying issue that will affect the overall success of the other programs mentioned. This has to do with, realigning our perspectives on what it means to be a part of this group, and finding meaningful roles the elderly can and should play in our societies.

What is the main topic of this speech?

A.The growing crisis of inadequate retirement pensions for the future.

B.The problem of providing adequate medical care for the elderly.

C.The need to reevaluate our attitudes towards senior citizens.

D.The need to reform. the present pension system.

Every group has a culture, however uncivilized it may seem to us. To the professional anth
ropologist, there is no intrinsic superiority of one culture over another, just as to the professional linguist, there is no intrinsic hierarchy among languages. People once thought of the languages of backward groups as undeveloped. While it is possible that language in general began as a series of grunts and groans, it is a fact established by the study of "backward" languages that no spoken tongue answers that description today. Most languages of uncivilized groups are, by our most severe standards, extremely complex. They differ from Western languages not in their sound patterns or grammatical structures, which usually are fully adequate for all language needs, but only in their vocabularies, which reflect the objects and activities known to their speakers. Even in this aspect, two things are to be noted. First, all languages seem to possess the machinery for vocabulary expansion, either by putting together words already in existence or by borrowing them from other languages and adapting them to their own system. Second, the objects and activities requiring names and distinctions in "backward" languages, while different from the West, are often surprisingly numerous and complicated. A Western language distinguishes merely between two degrees of remoteness ("this" and "that"). But some languages of the American Indians distinguish between what is close to the speaker, or to the person addressed, or removed from both, or out of sight, or in the past, or in the future.

Every group of human beings has______.

A.its own set of ideas, beliefs and ways of life

B.an extremely complex and delicate language

C.its own elegant music, literature, and other arts

D.the process of growing crops or raising animals

第10题
I strongly believe that it is rather important to be a good listener. And although I have
become a better listener than I was ten years ago, I have to admit I'm still only an adequate listener.

Effective listening is more than simply avoiding the bad habit of interrupting others while they are speaking or finishing their sentences. It's being content to listen to the entire thought of someone rather than waiting impatiently for your chance to respond. In some ways, the way we fail to listen is symbolic of the way we live. We often treat communication as if it were a race. It's almost like our goal is to have no gaps between the conclusion of the sentence of the person we are speaking with and the beginning of our own. My wife and I were recently at a cafeteria having lunch, overhearing the conversation around us. It seemed that no one was really listening to one another; instead they were taking turns not listening to one another. I asked my wife if I still did the same thing. With a smile on her face she said, "only sometimes".

Slowing down your responses and becoming a better listener aids you in becoming a more peaceful person. It takes pressure from you. If you think about it, you'll notice that it takes an enormous amount of energy and is very stressful to be sitting at the edge of your seat trying to guess what the person in front of you (or on the telephone) is going to say so that you can fire back your responses. But as you wait for the person you are communicating with to finish, as you simply listen more carefully to what is being said, you'll notice that the pressure you feel is off. You will immediately feel more relaxed, and so will the people you are talking to. They will feel safe in slowing down their own responses because they won't feel in competition with you for "air time"! Not only will becoming a better listener make you a more patient person, it will also enhance the quality of your relationships. Everyone loves to talk to someone who truly listens to what they are saying.

According to the passage, an effective listener should ______.

A.accept the speaker's thought critically

B.respond to the speaker's words slowly

C.wait for the chance to respond patiently

D.reply the speaker's questions patiently
