Silent Listening

If something bad just happened (happen) to your friend, what would you do? Would you mention it to him and say you feel sorry about it? Would you offer support or advice? According to Ruth Clark, such 41 (treat) could mean well, but it might not be what he 42 (real) wants or needs.

Clark asked some college students to imagine some 43 (pleasant) situations, e.g., a low exam grade or the dad’s 44 (lose) of his job.The students were then 45 (ask) how they would like to be treated by a friend who learned of the bad situation from someone else. The results were a little 46 (surprise). Some said they would want and expect their friend to mention the 47 (annoy) situation, but most of the students in the study 48 (respond) that they would like the friend not to do it.The students made the 49 (decide) for themselves whether to discuss their problem with a friend. So, there is value in being a silent 50 (listen) around a troubled friend.

In 1920, barely out of his teens, Alfred Hitchcock went to work for an American film company which had opened a studio in Islington, London. His first job at the studio was writing captions (脚本) for silent movies. Within two years, he was writing scripts(剧本) and working as an assistant director.

For the rest of the 1920s, Hitchcock worked on one film after another in Britain and Germany. Filming was often a rough-and-ready(匆忙做成的) affair and the assistant director was required to step in and plug gaps. A cameraman went missing, Hitchcock became a cameraman. A scene needed rewriting, Hitchcock rewrote it. Someone needed to be in charge of money when the film crew was on location, Hitchcock looked after the money.

At the same time, this being the era of silent movies, Hitchcock was learning the language of cinema: telling a story-not through dialogue, but through visual images(视觉影象). This led to his success later.

When he began to direct his own films, first in Britain and later in Hollywood, he was determined to make films that held the audience's attention and kept tension(紧张感). He succeeded. Hitchcock's ability to put you on the edge of your seat makes him one of the greatest makers of suspense(悬念) movies.

Simone de Beauvoir's work greatly influenced Betty Firedan's—indeed, made it possible. Why
, then, was it Friedan who became the prophet of women's emancipation in the United States? Political conditions, as well as a certain anti-intellectual bias, prepared Americans and the American media to better receive Friedan' s deradicalized and highly pragmatic The Feminine Mystique, published in 1963, than Beauvoir's theoretical reading of women's situation in The Second Sex. In 1953 when The Second Sex first appeared in translation in the United States, the country had entered the silent, fearful fortress of the anticommunist McCarthy years (1950- 1954), and Beauvoir was suspected of Marxist sympathies. Even The Nation, a generally liberal magazine, warned its readers against "certain political leanings" of the author. Open acknowledgment of the existence of women's oppression was too radical for the United States in the fifties, and Beauvoir' s conclusion, that change in women's economic condition, though insufficient by itself, "remains the basic factor" in improving women's situation, was particularly unacceptable.

According to the passage, one difference between The Feminine Mystique and The Second Sex is that the former______.

A.rejects the idea that women are oppressed

B.contains anti-intellectual biases

C.does not reflect the political beliefs of its author

D.concentrates on the practical aspects of women's emancipation

A musical film belongs to a film genre that' features songs, sung by the actors, interwove
n into the narrative. The songs are usually used to advance the plot or develop the film's characters. A sub-genre of the musical is the musical comedy, which includes a strong element of humour as well as the usual music, dancing and storyline.

The musical is responsible for the transition from silent film to sound film in the development of the mo- ti0n picture. The popularity of movies grew rapidly during the golden days of the silent film era, but the concept of "talking pictures" was considered a risky investment by the msjor Hollywood studies, until the Warner Bros. studio took the leap and produced "The Jazz Singer", starring Al Jolson. Jolson's song "Msmmy" in the picture forever changed the medium of film, and it jolted Hollywood into the era of sound. As Hollywood adapted to sound films, musicals were an important part of Hollywood' s movie output, ranking alongside action movies (Westerns), dramas, and comedies.

Musical stars such as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were among the most popular and highly respected personalities in Hollywood. Many dramatic actors gladly participated in musicals as a way to break away from their typical typecast roles. For instance, James Cagney had originally risen to fame on the stage as a singer and dancer, and he was highly, talented; but his repeated casting in "tough guy" roles and gangster movies gave him few chances. to display these talents. Cagney's Oscar-winning role in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" allowed him tosing and dance, and he considered it to be one of his finest moments.

Many comedies, (and a few dramas) included their own musical numbers. The Marx Brothers' movies included a musical number, in nearly every film, allowing the Marx Brothers themselves to. highlight their own musical talents.

The musical in film was a natural development from the stage musical. Typically the biggest difference between the movie musical and the musical theater is the use of lavish background scenery which would be impractical in a theater. Many musical films, e.g. "Oklahoma!' and "The Sound of Music", are straightforward adaptations or restaging of successful stage productions. Others, e.g. "Moulin Rouge!", were specifically written for the screen, and some, such as "Singin' in the Rain', have made a revere transition from their o- riginal screen version to a successful stage format at a much later date.

The trend is modem film-malting is not to make a "musical" as such, but to use a lot of background music by popular rock or pop bands in the hopes of selling the soundtrack album to falls. There are exceptions to this rule, and films about actors, dancers or singers have been made as successful modem-style. musicals, with the music as, an intrinsic part of the storyline. The other exception to the rule is children's animated movies. These almost always include traditional musical numbers, and some of them, such as Beauty and the Beast, have later become full live stage productions.

A musical film______.

A.is a kind of silent film

B.is a broader ca. gory than musical comedy

C.is a kind of film genre which uses a lot of background music

D.belongs to Westerners
