Passage Four

Every culture and every country in the world celebrates New Year, but not everyone does it the same way. The countries in North America and Europe welcome New Year on January the first. This practice began with the Romans in the Middle East, New Year is when spring begins. People in China and Vietnam celebrate it on the first day of the Spring Festival, which is the first day of their calendar based on the moon. Rosh Hashana, which is the Jewish (犹太人的) New Year, comes at the end of summer. The Hindus (印度教教徒 ) in India celebrate the first day of each season, so they have four New Years.

In all these cultures, there is a practice of making noise. People made noise in ancient times to drive away the evil spirits (妖精) from their homes. Today making noise is more of a custom than a religious rim

In the United States, many people stay up until midnight on New Year's Eve to watch the clock pass from one year to the next. Friends often gather together at a party on New Year's Eve, and when the new year comes, all ring bells, blow' whistles, sing songs, and kiss each other. A favorite Scottish song which everyone sings together is Auld Lang Sync. The words tell of old friends and good times.

In all cultures, New Year's Day is a time when people think of new beginnings. They want to make the coming year better than the last one. Many people in the United States make New Year resolutions. Distance learning is a program that allows students to take classes online. Online cla
sses offer on-campus classes, with the convenience of working at home, and the flexibility of creating your own schedule. Anna attends her online class in her pajamas. She gets away with it because her classroom is in her home. Anna is a full-time student learning from distance, and full time mother. She likes the online option because of its flexibility. “I don’t have to sit in class with my two little ones in day care. Instead, I can jump online anytime I like during the day,” said Anna who is preparing for a nursing degree. “What I liked most was the fact that I didn’t have to travel to another place, and I could work at my own place,” she said in an e-mail. Online students must be organized. Self-discipline and motivation are also important. Diana is a math instructor who has been teaching online classes for five and a half years. She had students who participated from far way. Many are returning students who have been working. They are focused on their goals, and are comfortable working hard. Taking classes online can have some unexpected benefits. For instance, the need to communicate questions by e-mail compels students to become better written communicators. Also, you don’t have to worry about appearance. Michael, a current online student, said in an e-mail, “I can just roll out of bed and not worry about how messy my hair is.” Anna included not having to fight for parking or paying for gas as added tuition fee. Taking classes online does have some drawbacks. Students complain about the difficulties of communicating online. Instructors complain about the students’ ability to use digital media. Online classes can end up taking more time than on-campus versions. “An online student should expect to spend at least 15 hours a week working on their assignments,” said Diana the math teacher. The extra time is needed because students must clearly demonstrate understanding of the material through email and online quizzes.

B. to understand how to be a full-time mother

14.In the following statements, which is NOT the advantage of distance learning?

A. You can learn from home, wherever your home is.

B. You don’t need to care about your appearance when attending the class.

Passage Four Dressing fashionably was very important in fourteenth-century Spain. This

Passage Four

Dressing fashionably was very important in fourteenth-century Spain. This was especially true for any man who considered himself an aristocrat or dandy. Before going out, a well-dressed man would put on his finest boots, one of his embroidered caps and his favorite beard, dyed to match the color of his clothing.

Believe it or not, false beards were once as popular as neckties are today. Beards had for years considered a sign of strength and manhood, and the bigger and thicker they were, the better. Those unfortunates who had little facial hair were forced by custom into wearing false beards made of horsehair. Soon, however man in the Spanish fashion world was wearing them too, while many quite substantial real beards were shaved off to make way for the false variety.

By day, the fashionable dandy might wear a yellow or a crimson beard to impress his friends, but in the evening a long black beard was proper for serenading his senorita, Any color or shape of beard could be had.

However, as you can imagine, the growth of this unusual custom created many interesting problems. People with similar beards were mistaken for one another. Creditors could not find debtors, and police often arrested the wrong people, while the real villain escaped wearing their hairy disguises. The price of horsehair skyrocketed. Finally, King Philip IV of Aragon put a stop to all the foolishness by outlawing the wearing of false beards.

46. What is the passage mostly concerned with?

A. The size of beards.

B. The color of beards.

C. Varieties of false beards.

D. The custom of wearing false beards.
