If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again.Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact.Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory,he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor,he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. The position is exactly the same as that of two persons, one of whom exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motorcar all day.

If a friend complains that his arms are weak,we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to be blamed,or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever; but all of us can,if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means——practice.

Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? Why is this? Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things; they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, times and prices, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.

So if you want a good memory, learn from the poor and humble: practice remembering.

1.Which of the following is true, according to the first paragraph?()

A.It is a fact that some people do not use their arms or legs.

B.To have a good memory, one has to exercise it regularly.

C.Everybody knows that memory of words is the same way as the arms or legs.

D.To keep fit,one should not sit in a chair or a motorcar.

2.In the author’s opinion,poor memory results from().

A.poor health B.lack of remembering practice

C.unlucky fortune D.insufficient education

3.The author seems to advice us().

A.to play tennis to improve our memory

B.to complain about nothing but our health

C.to blame ourselves rather than our parents for the poor memory

D.to learn from those who cannot read or write

4.The author comes to the conclusion that().

A.the poorer one is,the better his memory

B.memory can be improved by practicing it

C.the poor and humble people may help you remember things

D.if you want a good memory,do not read or write anything

5.Which of the following may best serve as the title of the article?()

A.Poor and Good Memory.

B.How to Improve Your Memory.

C.Your Arms,Legs and Brain.

D.Learn from the Poor and Humble.

阅读文章,回答下列各题: As we know, if we want to keep our healthy and have a strong body,
our eating habits are very important in our daily life. There are times when most of us would rather eat sweets and ice cream than meat and rice. Actually, sweets and ice cream are not bad for the stomach if we eat them at the end of a meal. If we eat them before a meal, they may take away our appetite. Meanwhile, it is important for us to eat our meal at the same time each day. When we feel hungry, it shows that our bodies need food. When we feel angry or excited, we may not want to eat. When we are worded, we may not want to, eat, either. A long time ago, in England, some judges used to decide whether, a man was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread. If the man could not swallow the bread, it was a sign that he wasn t telling the troth. Although this seems very strange and rather foolish, it is indeed an excellent way of finding out the truth. A man who is worrying about something has difficulty in swallowing anything dry. He loses his appetite and does not want to eat anything if he is worrying something. We have to develop good ,eating habits because__________

A.we want to be healthy and strong

B.we want to enjoy our food

C.we want to eat more

D.we want to save time

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage

Among all the animals, the ape is most like human beings. Both people and apes have the similar brain structure, the similar nerve system, and the similar kind of blood.

There are four kinds of apes: the chimpanzee(黑猩猩), the orangutan(猩猩), the gorilla(大猩猩), and the gibbon(长臂猿). They live in the deep forests and warm tropical regions of Africa and of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia.

All apes are covered with brown, reddish-brown, or black hair everywhere on their bodies except their faces, feet, and hands. Their hands each have four fingers and a thumb that helps them grip things the way our thumbs help us. But they also have a thumb on each foot instead of a big toe. Thus they can hold things with their feet also. Having short, weak legs, apes do not walk on the ground very much. However, their arms are very strong. This enables them to swing from branches and travel very quickly from tree to tree.

These animals live in small family groups that move from place to place in search of vegetables and fruits. They also eat eggs, small animals, nuts, and insects. When they are tired, they build nests in the trees. But they rarely sleep there for more than a night or two. Then they move on to look for more food.

There are some differences among the following three kids of apes. The gibbon is never more than three feet high and weight only about fourteen pounds. The gorilla grows to be six feet tall and weight up to 600 pounds. The orangutan is smaller than the gorilla. It stands three to five feet tall and weight up to 200 pounds.

Chimpanzees are the smartest of all apes. They can be taught to sit at a table and eat, to dress themselves, and to do things that human children can do.

11. What does the first paragraph tell us?

[A] The ape looks like human beings most.

[B] People and the ape think alike.

[C] People and the ape behave alike.

[D] The ape is the most intellectual animal in the world.

12. Which of the following sentences is TRUE?

[A] All apes are brown or black.

[B] All parts of apes' bodies are covered with hair.

[C] Apes have weak legs but very strong arms.

[D] Apes' arms are strong enough to swim.

13. Apes build nests in the trees but seldom sleep there for more than a night or two because ________.

[A] They like to live in small family groups

[B] They like to move from place to place in search of more food

[C] They like to eat eggs, small animals, nuts and insects

[D] it rains too often in the deep forests

14. Among the three kinds of apes, ________.

[A] the gorilla is the biggest

[B] the gibbon is only three feet high but it is heavier than the orangutan

[C] the orangutan is smaller than the gorilla and cleverer than the gibbon

[D] the orangutan can stand up to a great height, but others cannot

15. The last paragraph tells us that ________.

[A] chimpanzees can do better than human children

[B] chimpanzees can do many things that human children cannot do

[C] human children can do many things that chimpanzees cannot do

[D] the intelligence of chimpanzees is similar to that of human children

Sports and games make our bodies strong, prevent us from getting too fat, and keep us heal
thy. But there are not their only use. They give us valuable practice in making eyes, brain and muscles work together. In tennis, our eyes see the ball coming, judge its speed and direction and pass this information on to the brain. The brain then has to decide what to do, and to send its orders to the muscles of the arms, legs, and so on, so that the ball is met and hit back where it ought to go. All this must happen with very great speed, and only those who have had a lot of practice at tennis can carry out this complicated chain of events successfully. For those who work with their brains most of the day, the practice of such skills is especially useful.

Sports and games are also very useful for character-training. In their lessons at school, boys and girls may learn about such virtues as unselfishness, courage, discipline and love of one's country; but what is learned in books cannot have the same deep effect on a child's character as what is learned by experience. The ordinary day-school cannot give much practical training in living, because most of the pupils' time is spent in classes, studying lessons. So it is what the pupils do in their spare time that really prepares them to take their place in society as citizens when they grow up. If each of them learns to work for his team and not for himself on the football field, he will later find it natural to work for the good of his country instead of only for his own benefit.

When we play tennis we have to ______.

A.use, first, our eyes, then the brain and finally the muscles

B.make our eyes, brain and muscles work almost at the same time

C.use mainly the arms and legs to hit the ball

D.use mainly the muscles so that the ball is met and hit back

下列各 A.It’s hardly breaking news that junk food is bad for us.But just how bad—and just
how much food companies know about the addictive(添加剂) components of certain foods, and just how much they deliberately target the most vulnerable consumers knowing they are doing damage-is still being discovered. The New York Times offers the latest installment in this weekend’s magazine with an article about the science of junk food addiction. B.Nearly everything written about food in the mainstream media relies on the san2e narrative:Obesity is bad. That kind of reporting is part of what’s keeping us sick. There’s no denying the fact that the American public has gotten larger in recent decades.Along with getting fatter, weve also seen a rise in illnesses like.heart disease and certain cancers.Instead of focusing on how our health is hurting.most of the media coverage uses the term “obesity”.making the story more about weight than about health—to the point where it’s become an accepted truth that“fat”equals “unheaithy”. C.That’s not actually the case.though.While “the obesity epidemic” may be a convenient catch.all for the illnesses and health problems related to our food chain.it’s a lazy term and an inaccurate one.Are we actually worried about public health? 0r are we offended by fat bodies that don’t meet our thin ideals? In all seriousness:what good does a focus on body size actually do? D.If we’re actually concerned about health.then we should focus on health. The addictive qualities of our food, the lack of oversight (监督). the high levels of chemicals and the government subsidies (补贴) to make prices lower making the worst foods the most accessible should concern us and spur us to action. Nutrient-deficient (营养缺乏) chemically-processed "food" in increasingly larger sizes is bad for all of our bodies, whether were fat or thin or somewhere in between. So is the culture in which fast food is able to thrive. Americans work more than ever before; we take fewer vacation days and put in longer hours, especially since the recession hit. The US remains the only industrialized country without national paid parental leave and without compulsory annual vacation time; we also have no federal law requiring paid sick days. 85% of American men and 66% of women work more than 40 hours per week. In Norway, for comparison, 23% of men work more than 40-hour weeks, and only 7% of women. E.Despite all this work, American income levels remain remarkably divided into the poorest and the richest, with the richest few controlling nearly all of the wealth. In one of the wealthiest countries on earth, one in seven people rely on federal food aid, with most of the financial benefits going to big food companies who are also able to produce cheap, nutritionally questionable food thanks to agricultural subsidies. The prices of the worst foods are arificially depressed, the big food lobbies have enormous power, and the biggest loser is the American public, especially low-income folks wbo spend larger proportions of their income on food but face systematic impediments (妨碍) to healthy eating and exercise. F.With demanding work days, little time off and disproportionate amounts of our incomes going toward things like health insurance and childcare that other countries provide at a lower cost, is it any surprise that we eat fast-food breakfast on our laps in the car and prefer dinner options that are quick and cheap? G. Reforming our food system requires major structural changes, not just saying no to put down that bag of chips. We need to push back against corporate interests. Food companies are incredibly" good at positing themselves as crusaders (拥护者) for personal choice and entities simply dedicated to giving the public what it wants. Somehow, big food companies have convinced us that drinking a 32oz soda is a matter of personal liberty, and that the government has no place in regulating how much liquid sugar can be sold in a single container. H.In fact, we know-and they certainly know-that human beings are remarkably bad at judging how much were eating. Food companies use that information to encourage over-consumption, and to target certain consumers who tend to have less disposable income to invest in healthy food poor people, people of color, kids. I. Food is a social justice issue that has disproportionately negative impacts on groups already facing hardship. That should be an issue for every socially conscious person. But when looking at the large number of problems caused not only by our big food industry but by the policies that enable them and our cultural norms that incentivize poor health choices, too many people simply turn "obesity" into the boogeyman(恶巫) . Doctors even blame fatness for all sorts of medical conditions and people dont get proper treatment. Fat women go to the doctor less often for routine cancer screenings, and patients report doctors focusing on their weight and ignoring real medical problems like broken bones and asthma (哮喘). J.On the policy side, promoters of laws that incentivize health or push back on corporate food interests such as Michelle Obarnas Lets Move ! initiative, bans on extra-large sodas, and extra SNAP benefits at farmers markets inevitably target " obesity" in their campaigns. That strategy has the effect of maligning (诽谤) the beauty of certain bodies instead of encouraging everyone to be healthier and countering the enormous influence of big companies. As a result, many people who should be the natural allies of health-promoting initiatives are put off by the shaming fat language. K."Obesity epidemic" language has also fed into the idea of body size and eating habits as social group. Thinner kale (甘蓝) eating elite liberals in the Northeast are trying to force-feed cabbage to heavier real Americans in the South and Midwest. No one wins with that kind of cultural polarization. L.Yes, lets push back against big food companies and question their outsized influence in Washington and in our daffy lives, and lets focus on making healthy food more widely accessible. Lets realize that the challenges extend beyond just what we eat. Lets fight for the humane (仁爱的) work policies that will make us all healthier. M.But lets do that because public health is all of our concern, not because its culturally easy to point the finger at fat people. Giving every member of a society the chance to be as healthy as possible is a moral good. It saves money and it saves lives. So lets do it the right way and the most effective way without lazily relying on the word "obesity". As a social justice problem, food negatively impact on groups who already have had a difficult life.

In the case of mobile phones, change is everything. Recent research indicates that the mob
ile phone is changing not only our culture, but our very bodies as well.

First, let's talk about culture. The difference between the mobile phone and its parent, the fixed-line phone, you get whoever answers it.

This has several implications. The most common one, however, and perhaps the thing that has changed our culture forever, is the "meeting" influence. People no longer need to make firm plans about when and where to meet. Twenty years ago, a Friday night would need to be arranged in advance. You needed enough time to allow everyone to get from their place of work to the first meeting place. Now, however, a night out can be arranged on the run. It is no longer "see you there at 8", but "text-me around 8 and we'll see where we all are".

Texting changes people as well. In their paper, "Insights into the Social and Psychological Effects of SMS Text Messaging", two British researchers distinguished between two types of mobile phone users: the "talkers" and the "texters"--those who prefer voice to text message and those who prefer text to voice.

They found that the mobile phone's individuality and privacy gave texters the ability to express a whole new outer personality. Texters were likely to report that their family would be surprised if they were to read their texts. This suggests that texting allowed texters to present a self-image that differed from the one familiar to those who knew them well.

Another scientist wrote of the changes that mobiles have brought to body language. There are two kinds that people use while speaking on the phone. There is the "speakeasy": the head is held high, in a self-confident way, chatting away. And there is the "spacemaker': these people focus on themselves and keep out other people.

Who can blame them? Phone meetings get cancelled or reformed and camera-phones intrude on people's privacy. So, it is understandable if your mobile makes you nervous. But perhaps you needn't worry so much. After all, it is good to talk.

When people plan to meet nowadays, they ______.

A.arrange the meeting place beforehand

B.postpone fixing the place till last minute

C.seldom care about when and where to meet

D.still love to work out detailed meeting plans
