The Olympics began in Greece more than 2,700 years ago. The games were originally part of a religious festival in honour of the Greek gods. Eventually, the games became the most important festival in all of Greece.

Since 776 BC the games were held regularly for about 1,200 years. In the year 397AD the Olympics were prohibited by the Roman Emperor.

It was not until 1896 that the first Olympics of modem times were held in Athens. From then on the games have been held every four years regularly. The Olympics have become the world's most important athletic event and a symbol of the sporting friendship of all the people of the world.

The first ancient Olympics were held in 776 B.C. The games got their name from Olympia, the Greek city where they took place. Like the summer Olympics of today, the ancient Olympics were held every four years.

Thousands of people from all over the Greek world came to watch. The main stadium held about 45,000 people. "We have accounts of visitors and pilgrims setting up tents all around the site", Lisa Cerrato of Tufts University said.

During the first Olympics, there was only one competition—a 200-meter race. But over time the games grew to include wrestling, chariot racing, boxing, and other sports. Women were not allowed to compete, but they had their own separate games.

"The ancient athlete became celebrities(名人), just like today. They often lived the rest of their lives being treated to free dinners", Cerrato said. "City-states even tried to steal away each other's athletes by offering them various awards".

The ancient Olympics existed until A.D. 393. But the modern Olympics are still going strong.

Where did the ancient Greeks hold their first Olympics?()

A.In Athens.

B.In Olympics.

C.In a town.

D.In a state.

听力原文: The Olympic Games were first held at Olympia in ancient Greece as long ago as 776 B. C. They were held once four years. The custom lasted for more than 1,000 years, but died out under the ruler of Rome and ceased with the decline of ancient Greek civilization. Then in 1896 the Games were revived. In that year, a French man, Baron de Coubertin, decided to try to start the Game again. He wished to renew those ideals of excellence of body, mind, and spirit shown in the classic Greek Olympics. He succeeded, and the modern Olympic Games began in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Since then the Olympics have grown steadily with more and more nations and athletes taking part. Because of the world wars, they were not held in 1916, nor in 1940 and 1944. They have been regularly held ever since then. Held every four years, the Olympics present the world's most important athletic contests. Athletes from all over the world take part in the modem Olympic Games. Any nation may enter a team in the games if it agrees to follow the rules of the International Olympic Committee. Athletes of many nations compete in a variety of sports divided into Winter Games and Summer Games. The Olympic Games are held each time in a different city of the world. The 1980 Winter Olympic Games were held in Lake Placid, the United States:
