"I do." To Americans those two words carry great meaning. They can even change your life.
Especially if you say them at your own wedding. Making wedding vows is like signing a contract, Now Americans don't really think marriage is a business deal. But marriage is serious business.

It all begins with engagement. Traditionally, a young man asks the father of his sweetheart for permission to marry her. If the father agrees, the man later proposes to her. Often he tries to surprise her by "popping the question" in a romantic way. Sometimes the couple just decides together that the time is right to get married. The man usually gives his fiancfe a diamond ring as a symbol of their engagement. They may be engaged for weeks, months or even years. As the big day approaches, bridal showers and bachelor's parties provide many useful gifts. Today many couples also receive counseling during engagement. This prepares them for the challenges of married life.

At last it's time for the wedding. Although most weddings follow long-held traditions, there's still room for American individualism. For example, the usual place for a wedding is in a church. But some people get married outdoors in a scenic spot. A few even have the ceremony while sky-diving or riding on horseback! The couple may invite hundreds of people or just a few close friends. They choose their own style. of colors, decorations and music during the ceremony. But some things rarely change. The bride usually wears a beautiful, long white wedding dress. She traditionally wears "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue". The groom wears a formal suit or tuxedo. Several close friends participate in the ceremony as attendants, including the best man and the maid of honor.

As the ceremony begins, the groom and his attendants stand with the minister, facing the audience. Music signals the entrance of the bride's attendants, followed by the beautiful bride. Nervously, the young couple repeats their vows. Traditionally, they promise to love each other "for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health". But sometimes the couple has composed their own vows. They give each other a gold ring to symbolize their marriage commitment. Finally the minister announces the big moment: "I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride!"

At the wedding reception, the bride and groom greet their guests. Then they cut the wedding cake and feed each other a bite. Guests mingle while enjoying cake, punch and other treats. Later the bride throws her bouquet of flowers to a group of single girls. Tradition says that the one who catches the bouquet will be the next m marry. During the reception, playful friends "decorate" the Couple's car with tissue paper, tin cans and a "Just Married" sign. When the reception is over, the newlyweds run to their "decorated" car and speed off. Many couples take a honeymoon, a one, to-two-week vacation trip, to celebrate their new marriage.

Almost every culture has rituals to signal a change in one's life; Marriage is one of the most basic life changes for people of all cultures. So it's no surprise to find many traditions about getting married...even in America. Yet each couple follows the traditions in a way that is uniquely their own.

The word "business" occurs twice in the first paragraph, what does the second "business" mean?

A.Trade.

B.Affair.

C.Duty.

D.Right.

听力原文: People in the U.S., when they attain legal marriage age and meet certain medical
requirements, are free to choose their own mates. Once a couple has decided to get married, the man customarily gives the girl a diamond ring. The use of a ring comes from the ancient custom of using a ring to settle an important agreement. When the wedding day is decided upon, the girl sends out wedding announcements or invitations to friends and relatives. They then send wedding gifts to the girl's home.

On the wedding day it is supposed to be bad luck for the bride and groom to see each other before the wedding. Another old custom that many people believe will bring good luck to the marriage is for the bride to wear 'something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue'.

Before the wedding day the groom always chooses a "best man", a good friend to help him and stand beside him during the wedding ceremony. The custom of having a "best man" is thought to have come from ancient times when a strong friend helped the groom and bride escape from the bride's father.

When a couple marries, the groom gives his bride a wedding ring. Many marriages are double-ring ceremonies—that is, the bride and the groom exchange rings. The wedding ring is customarily a simple plain gold band. The roundness of the ring symbolizes eternity and announces that the couple is united for life. The wedding ring is worn on the third finger of the left hand. People believe that a vein from the third finger runs directly to the heart.

Near the end of the reception, which is offered by the bride's parents, the bride throws her bouquet of flowers to the unwed bridesmaids. The lucky girl who catches it is supposed to be the next in the group to be married. As the bride and groom leave for their honeymoon, the guests all throw confetti on them. This is a symbol of joy and happiness.

Questions:

15.Which of the following requirements is essential if a young couple wants to get married?

16.Why shouldn't the bride and groom see each other before the wedding on the wedding day according to the passage?

17.What does the custom of having a 'best man' for the groom tell us about an cient times?

18.Why is the wedding ring worn on the third finger of the left hand?

(35)

A.To get consent from their parents.

B.To prepare rings for exchange.

C.To be of legal age and to meet certain medical requirements.

D.To send out announcements and invitations.

1 Traditionally, the woman has held a low position in marriage partnerships. While her hu
sband went his way she had to wash, stitch and sew. Today the move is to liberate the woman, which may in the end strengthen the marriage union.

2 Perhaps the greatest obstacle to friendship in marriage is the amount a couple usually see of each other. Friendship in its usual sense is not tested by the strain of daily, year-long cohabitation. Couples need to take up separate interests (and friendship) as well as mutually shared ones, if they are not to get used to the more attractive elements of each other's personalities.

3 Married couples are likely to exert themselves for guests -- being amusing, discussing with passion and point -- and then to fall into dull exhausted silence when the guests have gone.

4 As in all friendship,a husband and wife must try to interest each other, and to spend sufficient time sharing absorbing activities to give them continuing common interests. But at the same time they must spend enough time on separate interests with separate people to preserve and develop their separate personalities and keep their relationship fresh.

5 For too many highly intelligent working women, home represents chore obligations, because the husband only tolerates her work and does not participate in household chores. For too many highly intelligent working men, home represents dullness and complaints — from an over-dependent wife who will not gather courage to make her own life.

6 In such an atmosphere, the partners grow further and further apart, both love and liking disappearing. For too many couples with children, the children are allowed to command all time and attention, allowing the couple no time to develop liking and friendship, as well as love, allotting them exclusive parental roles.

According to the passage, which of the following statements is CORRECT?

A.Friendship in marriage means daily, year-long cohabitation.

B.Friendship can be kept fresh by both separate and shared interests.

C.Friendship in marriage is based on developing similar interests.

D.Friendship in marriage is based on developing separate interests.
