All of us can change our behaviour to fit different situations. We are often noisy at wed

dings and sympathetic at funerals. Our table manners are not the same at a picnic as in a restaurant. When speaking with people,we feel free to interrupt close friends but tend to listen to our employers until they finish. If we don’t make such adjustments(调整),we are likely to get into trouble. From one point of view, language is behaviour;it is part of the way we act.And like every other kind of behaviour,it must be adjusted to fit different contexts or situations where it is use

For instance, among people who are used to a writing system, there is one adjustment everyone makes:they speak one way and write another way.Speakers can stop in the middle of a conversation and repeat themselves if they sense that they are being misunderstood;writers often go back over their writing to see that it is clear, which is,however, before the communication occur.Once writers have passed their writing to someone else, they cannot change it. Speakers can use intonation(语调),stress(重音),and pauses to help make their meaning clear.A simple sentence like “John kept my pencil” may mean,by a shift in the stress and intonation patterns, either John rather than someone else kept the pencil,or John kept rather than just borrowed the pencil,or it was a pencil rather than anything else that he kept.Writers,on the other hand, have their special tools of various punctuation(标点) marks, capitals, italic(斜体) letters, and so on.Skillful writers could also change the word order of a sentence. So“Cindy only had five dollars” could be turned into “Cindy had only five dollars” to mean Cindy had no more than five dollars,or into “Only Cindy had five dollars” to mean nobody but Cindy had five dollars.

One of the most authoritative voices speaking to us today is, of course, the voice of the
advertisers. Its shrilling clamour(喧闹声)dominates our lives. It shouts at us from the television screens and the radio loudspeakers; waves to us from every page of the newspaper; plucks at our sleeves on the escalator; signals to us from the mad-side Billboards all day and flashes messages to us in coloured lights at night.

Advertising has been among England's biggest growth industries since the war, in terms of the ratio of money earnings to demonstrate achievement. Why all this fantastic expenditure?

Perhaps the answer is that advertising saves the manufacturers from having to think about the customer. At the stage of designing and developing a product, there is quite enough to think about without worrying over whether anybody will want to buy it. The designer is busy enough without adding customer appeal to all his other problems of man-hours and machine tolerances and stress factors. So they just go ahead and make the thing and leave it to the advertiser to find eleven ways of making it appeal to purchasers after they finish it, by pretending that it gives status, or attracts love, or signifies manliness. If the advertising agency can do this authoritatively enough, the. manufacturer is in clover (养尊处优).

Other manufacturers find advertising saves them from changing their product. And manufacturers hate change. The ideal product is or another, some alteration seems called for how much better to change the image, the packet or the pitch made by the product, rather than go to all the inconvenience of changing the product itself.

According to the passage modern advertising becomes one of the most prosperous industries because ______.

A.people are more concerned with the image of a product rather than the product itself

B.it saves manufacturers from considering how the products can appeal to customers

C.there are all kinds of media available

D.there are many excellent advertisers who can make their voices authoritative

听力原文: Our culture is concerned with matters of self-esteem. Self-respect, on the other
hand, may hold the key to achieving the peach of mind we seek. (32)The two concepts seem very similar but the differences between them are crucial.

(29)To esteem anything is to evaluate it positively and hold it high regard, but evaluation gets us into trouble because while we sometimes win, we also sometimes lose. To respect something, on the other hand, is to accept it.

The word acceptance suggests to some readers that our culture does indeed deal with this idea of self-respect; after all, don't we have the concept that it is important to accept our limitations? Aren't many of us encouraged "to change the things we can change, accept the things we cannot change and know the difference between the two?"

(30)The person with self-respect simply likes herself or himself. This self-respect is not dependent on success because there are always failures to contend with, Neither is it a result of comparing ourselves with others because there is always someone better. There are techniques usually employed to increase self-esteem. (31)Self-respect, however, is a given. We simply like ourselves because of who we are and not because of what we can or cannot do.

My recent research, with Judith White and Johnny Walsh at Harvard University, points to the advantage of selfrespect. (32)Compared to those with high self-esteem who are still caught in an evaluative framework, those with self-respect are less prone to blame, guilt, regret, lies, have secrets and stress.

(33)

A.It is the same as self-respect.

B.It is totally different from self-respect.

C.It is to think only the positive even when we lose.

D.It is to evaluate positively and hold high regard.

We all believe that words of a language evolve (进化) gradually over the centuries, rather as animals and plants evolve over millions of years. Sometimes the change is so slight. as to be almost unnoticeable--finger, for example, means the same today as it did 1,000 years ago. Other words have changed out of all recognition. For example, modem English "lord", a person with high social positions, comes from Old English "hlaford". It used to mean "guardian of the bread", a person who protects the bread. But not all word meanings change like this. Just as new and different types of animals and plants can be reproduced, we can call completely new words into being.

Anyone can make a word. The difficult part is to make it stay in the language. To stand the best chance it should probably relate to a particular and fairly specialized subject. That cuts down the number of people who need to agree to use it. Chemists are often having to find expressions for new findings. Once that is achieved, there may be a chance for wider recognition if the expression comes to be of interest to the general public.

Ordinary people can make long-lasting words, though. In 1924, a competition (比赛) was held to make a word for a drinker of illegal liquor (非法出售的酒). A prize of US $200 was offered, and there were reportedly over 25,000 suggestions. The winners were Henry Irving Dale and Kate L. Butler, who both came up with "scofflaw". And that word exists in American English to this day, in the rather wider sense "someone who disobeys the law".

What can we learn from the text?

A.It is the duty of specialists to make new words.

B.People are encouraged to make new words.

C.Words evolve faster than animals and plants.

D.New words are usually made by chemists.

Some Things We Know about Language

Many things about language are a mystery, and many will always remain so.But some things we do know.

First,we know that all human beings have a language of some sort. There is no race of men anywhere on earth so backward that it has no language,no set of speech sounds by which the people communicate with one another. Furthermore,in historical times, there has never been a race of men without a language.

Second, there is no such thing as a primitiVe language. There are many people whose cultures are undeveloped, who are,as we say, uncivilized, but the languages they speak are not primitive. In all known languages we can see eomplexities that must have heen tens of thousands of years in developing.

This has not always been well understood; indeed, the direct contrary has often been stated.Popular ideas of the language of the American Indians will illustrate. Many people have supposed that the Indians communicated in a very primitive system of noises.Study has proved this to be nonsense. There are,or were, hundreds of American Indian languages, and all of them turn out to be very complicated and very old. They ale certainly different from the languages that most of us are familiar with, but they are no more primitive than Engish and Greek.

A third thing we know about language is that all languages are perfectly adequate. That is,each one is a perfect means of expressing the culture of the people who speak the language.

Finally,we know that language changes. It is natural and normal for language to change;the only languages which do not change are the dead ones. This is easy to understand if we look backward in time.Change goes on in all aspects of language. Grammatical features change as do speech sounds, and changes in vocabulary are sometimes very extensive and may occur very rapidly.Vocabulary is the least

One of the most authoritative voices speaking to us today is the voice of the advertisers.
Its strident clamour dominates our lives. It shouts at us from the television screen and the radio loudspeakers; waves to us from every page of the newspaper; plucks at our sleeves on the escalator; signals to us from the successful man as a man no less than 20% of whose mall consists of announcements of giant carpet sales.

Advertising has been among England's biggest growth industries since the war, in terms of the ratio of money earnings to demonstrable achievement. Why all this fantastic expenditure?

Perhaps the answer is that advertising saves the manufacturers from having to think about the customer. At the stage of designing and developing a product, there is quite enough to think about without worrying over whether anybody will want to buy it. The designer is busy enough without adding customer——appeal to all his other problems of man——hours and machine tolerances and stress factors, So they just go ahead and make the thing and leave it, by pretending that it confers status, or attracts love, or signifies manliness, if the advertising agency can to this authoritatively enough, the manufacturer is in clover.

Other manufacturers find advertising saves them changing their product. And manufacturers hate change. The ideal product is one which goes on unchanged for ever. If, therefore, for one reason or another, some alteration seems called for——how much better to change the image, the packet or tile pitch made by the product, rather than go to all the inconvenience of changing the product itself.

The advertising man has to combine the qualities of the three most authoritative professions: Church, Bar, and Medicine. The great skill required of our priests, most highly developed in missionaries but present, indeed mandatory, in all, is the kill of getting people to believe in and contribute money to something which can never be logically proved. At the Bar, an essential ability is that of presenting the most persuasive case you can to a jury of ordinary people, with emotional appeals masquerading as logical exposition; a case you do not necessarily have to believe in yourself, just one you have studiously avoided discovering to be false. As for medicine, any doctor will confirm that a large part of his job is not clinical treatment but faith healing. His apparently scientific approach enables his patients believe that he knows exactly what is wrong with them and exactly what they need to put them right, just as advertising does——"Run down? You need...". "No one will dance with you? A dab of * * * * will make you popular."

Advertising men use statistics rather like a drunk uses a lamp-post-for support rather than illumination. They will dress anyone up in a white coat to appear like an unimpeachable authority or, failing that, they will even be happy with the announcement, "As used by 90% of the actors who play doctors on television." Their engaging quality is that they enjoy having their latest ruses uncovered almost as anyone else.

It can be concluded from the passage that modern advertising is authoritative because of the way it ______.

A.interferes with the privacy of our home life

B.influences our image of the kind of person we ought to be like

C.continually forces us into buying things we don't want

D.distracts us wherever we go
